In this keynote, Catt Small makes the case that this moment calls for designers to stop waiting for direction and start defining their own value. She'll share how to treat career ladders as an ongoing conversation rather than a fixed path, and how to communicate that value upward so leadership can actually act on it. You'll leave with a clearer sense of what to do when nobody hands you the new playbook.
Strategic Research
Research has escaped the research team. Designers interview. Product managers test. Data teams interpret behaviour. AI synthesizes. Researchers enable, coach, connect and make sense. Research is becoming less of a role and more of a distributed organizational capability.
The result? Organizations aren’t short of evidence: they’re drowning in it. So the question is no longer how we get organizations to use research strategically, but how we help them to metabolize knowledge and create the conditions for action. No matter where we sit, or what our job title is.
We’ll zoom out from the individual changes reshaping research to look at the bigger shift: from data, to insight, to knowledge health. And why, now, turning what an organization knows into what it does is the most important commercial advantage it can have.
Then we’ll get into the skills that shift demands. What happens to critical thinking, nuance and our ability to sit with uncertainty when answers are instant and abundant? How do we create the psychological safety needed for hard conversations that drive change? How do we create the conditions for action and make ourselves heard when fact competes with feeling? And as research shows up in new places, where else can these skills create value if we stop trying to get back to where we were?
Together, these talks explore the new knowledge system that is emerging, the people within it and the skills we need next: for people newly expected to do research, researchers evolving their practice, and leaders shaping the capabilities, careers and organizations around them.

While everyone's talking about AI taking our jobs, what aren't we talking about?What about how it might be impacting critical thinking or our ability to hold nuance. The space to sit with a question instead of prompting our way past it. The permission to not have an opinion on everything, immediately, publicly.For so long, research has helped us hold contradictions, interrogate bias, and be comfortable not knowing yet. But in a world that increasingly rewards speed and certainty—where a new tool or update drops every hour—are those skills quietly under threat, and what does that mean for all of us?This talk makes space for slightly uncomfortable truths: what it means to accept you can't be an expert in everything. What if you don't want to make AI your entire personality? How to stay authentic when everything sounds the same. How to look after yourself through layoffs and uncertainty. And why caring a little less about some things might be how to care more about what matters. Part coach, part design leader, part person who is deeply interested in humankind—I don't have this figured out. But I do believe these are the conversations we're not making enough space for. So, let's do that. Together.

But, as many are finding, you can't really go back.This talk will focus on the “where” and “how” instead of the “what,” as in: where else can we apply our skills for the greatest impact and how will this offer new pathways to grow. A hammer that requires practice to use is a bad hammer. A cello that doesn't is a bad cello. We judge tools by what they make; we judge instruments by what they make us. Almost every AI product right now is a tool: engineered so that what you get on day one is what you'll get in year three, and (don’t get me wrong) that's a real achievement. But what if AI products were something else? This talk makes the case for considering an instrument as a design target: capability that compounds with use instead of absconding with it. We'll go through the four properties that separate the two, and put our own practice on the table to see which of our skills we've surrendered.

But what if AI products were something else? This talk makes the case for considering an instrument as a design target: capability that compounds with use instead of absconding with it. We'll go through the four properties that separate the two, and put our own practice on the table to see which of our skills we've surrendered.
